Chapter 8

TONI BIT BACK LAUGHTER AT Dax’s expression—it was kind of fun to watch him squirm. At last she took pity on the poor guy, released her lip from between her teeth and smiled.

“You’re thinking I might not be quite sane, aren’t you?” She tilted her head toward the gardens, where guests milled about after their pancake breakfasts, enjoying the antics of the hummingbirds. “Let’s walk, shall we? Further into the hollow, perhaps…away from the throng?”

Dax, still wide-eyed, said nothing—but he stood, came around the table and offered her a hand. She raised herself off the bench. Dax tried to help, and clearly underestimated his own strength.

“Oh!” Toni managed only a quick shriek of surprise as she catapulted upward and straight into his arms.

Dax’s chest rumbled with his deep, quiet laughter. “Pardon me, ma’am. Us cowpokes don’t know much about much, when it comes to a purty lady. And you…” His voice deepened and lost all humor. He slipped a finger beneath her chin and lifted her face upward, forcing her to meet his gaze. “You are so beautiful!”

She gasped, and barely aware of her own actions, slid both hands up his chest to his shoulders. “Dax…I don’t know—”

“Hush, Littlebird. Shhh…” He lowered his head so close to hers that his breath, laden with the sweet taste of hummingbird pancakes, fanned her lips and lit a fire in her soul. “Don’t say anything, darlin’.”

And then no distance remained between them. He touched his lips to hers, so gently, barely there, did-it-happen-or-not…almost like the kiss of a hummingbird. Even so, it reached deep, and wrapped around Toni’s heart in a hug not meant to ever be released.

Moaning softly, she pressed closer. Dax gathered her in and deepened the kiss.

Fire raced over Toni’s body, and blazed into her soul. She found herself unable to get close enough, and heard herself whimpering.

Dax moaned. He wrapped both hands around her arms and set her gently away.

She caught her breath and lifted her gaze to his, confused and a little hurt by the rejection. What she saw in his eyes stole the breath she’d only just found.

Desire. Raw, raging, barely bridled desire.

“Littlebird…honey, I want to hold you. I’ve never wanted anything so badly in my entire life. But look.” He took her shoulders and turned her to face the fabric entrance. “You have guests. Lots of them. The last thing I’d ever want to do is be the reason they lose respect for you.”

He slipped one arm around her shoulders and pulled her backward, just close enough for his lips to graze the back of her neck. “Or to show you any disrespect myself. You mentioned a walk. I think that’s a great idea. A walk in the cool air.”

Heat rose from Toni’s neck and into her face in a huge, rolling wave. How could she have thrown herself at him like that? What must he think of her now?

Dax chuckled, took her hand and led her out of the gazebo. “Don’t go thinking you know what’s in my head.
